Summery of the intervention; In the wake of October earthquake, more than 10000 schools
have been destroyed of which 145 primary schools are located in 6 Union Councils of District
Mansehra as mentioned above. As part of PVDP core corporate commitments for children in
emergencies, so has initiated a multi pronged rehabilitation and reconstruction program of
which provision of WES facilities in schools and ensuring effective utilization of provided
facilities is an important program intervention.
PVDP is one of the most experienced NGO in the sector with WES as its one of primary sector
domain and its staff having a long experience in the School WES and SSHE sectors. Now seeking
UNICEF funding for the provision of WES facilities and hygiene education in 145 target schools.
Objective of the intervention; The overall goal is to support “back to school campaign” of
Government of Pakistan and UNICEF by ensuring development of a child friendly and conducive learning environment in the primary schools in District Mansehra. |

- 240 teachers sensitized about HHE in 20 trainings through child to child approach
- 241 teachers trained in 145 schools in 6 UCs of Mansehra
- 280 Latrines facilities have been provided in 140 schools.

- 75 Hand Pumps installed in 75 schools
- 878 Health Hygiene Session conducted with 13,120 students in 145 schools

Summery of the intervention;

schools are located in 6 Union Councils of District Mansehra as mentioned above. As part of PVDP
core corporate commitments for children in emergencies, so has initiated a multi pronged rehabilitation
and reconstruction program of which provision of WES facilities in schools and ensuring effective utilization
of provided facilities is an important program intervention.
The proposed scheme would ensure improved heath and well being of the community living in harsh
and difficult environment that ultimately supported the enrollment in the 65 target schools by
providing them the conducive learning environment.

learning environment in the primary schools in District Batagram.

| Major Achievements from the interventions; |
- 113 schools assessed 65 selected and MoUs signed.
- 44 villages assessed 7 selected for intervention.
- 650 beneficiaries HH finalized in 7 villages.
- 65 Caretaker Committees have been formed in all schools.
- 6200 children sensitized on hygiene education.
- 550 latrines have been installed in Community to improve their life standard in a result
five Villages declared open defecation free .
- 65 schools provided with water points as per SPHERE standard along with hand washing
Points to improve hygiene condition and enrolment in targeted Schools.
189 latrines have been installed in 65 Schools to avoid open deification and control disease. .
- 160 Teachers trained on Child to child approach.
- 159-PTAs oriented through 6-HHE orientation sessions to assign roles and responsibilities .
- 80 stockholders (TMA,NGOs,LG) were oriented through Alliance Building Workshops.
- 65 School Environment Committees have been made.
- 80 religious leaders sensitized regarding the subject.
- Sanitation week conducted in Battagram and Allai more then 4000 people sensitized.
- Water tested in 65 Schools in a result water of 50 schools were found contaminated.
- 150 children sensitized through promotional campaign

schools and ensuring effective utilization of provided facilities is an important program intervention. |

- Conduction of 698 HHE sessions 12465 students sensitized on HHE.

- 3 water supply schemes completed in three villages 14000 population benefitted from

| Title of the intervention; Provision of Safe Drinking Water to 13 Communities of U/Cs (Jabbar & Sahcan) District Mansehra. |
Summery of the intervention; The earthquake of 8th October 2005 severely impacted the drinking
Water supply and sanitation systems in five districts each of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP)
and Azad State of Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Intake structures, treatment plants, storage reservoirs,
supply mains and distribution networks were damaged or destroyed. Wells and springs reported
significant reduction in yield while water sources in many localities dried up or were buried under
the landslides. Household latrines, sewerage networks, drains, solid waste management related
equipment and infrastructure And office and residential buildings of the line agencies also
Suffered considerable damages. |

The people were having no option but to use poor quality of water from streams/river, unprotected
springs And wells. This has resulted in a number of water borne diseases in the communities and among
the children. There is therefore a strong need and justification for restoration and rehabilitation existing
water Supply systems in order to ensure availability of clean drinking water to the earthquake affected
Population.
The proposed scheme would ensure improved heath and well being of the community living in harsh and difficult environment.
The project includes reconstruction of source, replacement of damaged pipes, redesign and reconstruction of storage reservoirs,
and provision of community tanks for equitable distribution of drinking water.

Objectives of the intervention; The objectives of this project are to improve health and general living
condition of people, particularly women and children of the target communities and to protect them
From water and sanitation related diseases through provision of safe water for drinking and domestic
Purposes. The availability of safe water and practicing hygienic principles using more water will
ensure erecting a barrier between human and pathogen thus healthy environment healthy children Earthquake. The objective is also to reduce burden on women of collecting water from distance sources,
Which is affecting their health and that of their children. |
| Major Achievements from the interventions; |

- 13-community representative VDOs established with improved capacity are planning to
implement development initiatives for their respective communities.
- 13-communities have access to safe drinking water facilities.
- Stakeholders (TMA, Nazmeen, Councillors, religious leaders, CBOs & NGOs etc.) have been oriented, consulted and remained involoved in the whole project cycle i.e. From appraisal to monitoring & evaluation.
- 65-VDO members trained in Social Mbilization & Organization Management and record keeping through series of 4-trainings.
- 13-Care taker committees capacity enhanced in Operation and Maintenance of community DWSS through a series of 5 training.
- 18336 individuals sensitized and oriented regarding the need and importance of safe Drinking water either directly or indirectly.
